In Episode 15 of #believethehype “Stan Van Gonedy”, we touched on the current feud between Dwight Howard and Stan Van Gundy where the latter confirmed to the press that Howard wants him fired. It was one of the most awkward train wrecks of a press conference that has ever happened.
Is there more to this than meets the eye? Is it not just a classic example of a star player and a coach not getting along. We dug a little deeper into this tale and found some conclusions that may shock you.
In the 1980′s America, nee the world went through a dark fase – The Cola Wars. It was Coca-Cola vs Pepsi. Arguably to this day, the battle is still raging on. There have been billions of dollars spent on advertising to keep this war public. #believethehype can confirm that it is the next phase of the Cola Wars that is tearing the Orlando Magic apart.
Dwight Howard is sponsored by Glaceau Vitamin Water. He loves the stuff. No matter where he goes, you see him drinking it. Why not? Coca-Cola pay him millions of dollars to endorse the stuff…
Whereas Stan Van Gundy is more of a Pepsi guy… He loves his Diet Pepsi. Despite not having any endorsements to the worlds 2nd largest beverage manufacturer, he is happy to display his support to the brand at any opportunity.
Van Gundy’s “nothing to lose” press conference was the ultimate “up yours” to Dwight by showing off his love for the diet fizzy drink of Howard’s competitors. He gave Pepsi hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of free media exposure in less than 24 hours.
All this means to the public is pick your side….
