Klay Thompson’s Dad takes away his allowance

Yesterday’s Pacers/Warriors brawl which saw David Lee & Roy Hibbert suspended for 1 game each & Klay Thompson, Steph Curry & Lance Stephenson all fined $35K has gained a lot of attention amongst the NBA community. However, this morning, we got to hear from the side that less commonly speaks out about these incidents, the family.

Klay’s father & 2xNBA Champion Mychal Thompson appeared on ESPN 710 LA’s ‘LA Now’ show this morning where he spoke to host Mark Willard about the incident, the repercussions for his son & a hilarious insight into Klay’s financial situation.

“I saw Klay mixed up in the beginning, tied up with George Hill,” Mychal said. “I say to myself, don’t do nothing stupid now, don’t throw a punch, don’t throw the ball at anybody.”

“Then Roy Hibbert turned his back & [Klay] was like ‘now’s my chance’!”

“I was like ‘you idiot’!”

He then went onto say that he recorded the incident to show his wife Julie who was out at the Cheesecake Factory buying Mychal Thompson some salmon for dinner. When she got home he said, “sit down & watch your dumb son”

“She got a kick out of it,” he continued, “She thought it was funny”.

This was the first time that Klay has ever been fined for an on court indiscretion in his NBA career & the consequences will be more noticeable to him than just the $35K fine. The 23-year-old doesn’t have access to his money, all cheques are paid to Mychal & Julie who take care of his accounts for him to make sure Klay’s financial situation is set up for his post NBA career.

So, naturally, Papa Thompson’s going to teach Klay a lesson of his own by fining him personally also, however, Klay will find out the old fashioned way.

“He will [find out he’s been fined by us] when he sees that cash envelope show up a little short this week,” he said.

So, if Mychal takes care of Klay’s finances, what does his week-by-week financial situation look like?

“Rent is $3K… Walking around money $300 a week…” Mychal explained.

“That’s a lot of money to go to the movies & buy pizza…”

But what if Klay wanted to take a girl out on a nice date?

“Go to Langers in Oakland… Go to the grocery store & get a nice [bottle of wine] for $30…”

What about the corkage fee?

“Sit in the car & drink it.”

God bless overbearing, yet awesomely hilarious NBA fathers.

UPDATE: Mychal Thompson taketh & giveth away… Klay’s older brother, Sioux Falls Skyforce swing man Mychel Thompson’s going to have an unusally large week financially…

Hamed Haddadi’s new Suns jersey

Yesterday, Hamed Haddadi who was recently traded from Memphis to Toronto & due to Visa issues then became a deadline deal to Phoenix, revealed his new Suns jersey number to the world on twitter:

He has now revealed what one of those two “special meanings” are for his jersey number, it’s the Iranian phone country code. Although he hasn’t revealed what the second one is, I believe that my answer above is still correct…

Pretty cool thing to show props for a his homeland. I guess his new nickname should be ET?

Known more for his cult-like off court persona as seen via his twitter account more than his on court game, hopefully Phoenix can be the destination where Haddadi improves on the limited minutes we’ve seen of him during his 5 year NBA career. However, being behind Marcin Gortat, Jermaine O’Neal, the Morris brothers & Luis Scola in the big-man rotation could hurt his chances.

ESPN’s Arash Markazi, revealed this via instagram when posting this photo.

Haddadi has said he’s looking forward to the opportunity in Phoenix, when speaking to Kevin Zimmerman from Valley of the Suns, he said this:

“Phoenix is one of my favorite cities so far,” he added. “And there are a lot of Persians here, too. I get a lot of messages, comments, they wish me good luck. They support me, so I’m happy to be here.”

Hopefully the fact that Haddadi means he’s going to be in a city that will feel like home to him means that he can produce a few great Instagrammy nominations for us at #believethehype!

Chris Bosh – Champion, All Star, Super Nerd

With Chris Bosh, nothing surprises me… But this came pretty damn close.

Bosh appeared today in an internet video created by Code.org featuring some of the worlds brightest minds & most powerful super nerds including Bill Gates & Mark Zuckerberg talking about the benefits of coding & why every student should have the opportunity to learn to learn the art.

Bosh reveals that when he was in High School he was in an after school computer group called the “Whiz-Kids” & learned to code then.

Is it just me or does “Chris Bosh & the Whiz-Kids” sound like a kick-ass name for a scooter gang?

Spurs bond over burgers

Only a couple of weeks after NBA FIT week, what better way for the San Antonio Spurs to celebrate team unity then by chowing down some greasy burgers?

Well, that’s exactly what they did in Oakland last week according to Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News.

Towards the end of their rodeo road trip, before boarding a plane in Oakland, instead of visiting a Michelin Star restaurant or having a carefully catered meal by their team chefs, the Spurs popped off the freeway to #believethehype’s favourite restaurant, In-N-Out.

“It was one of those carpe diem moments,” forward Matt Bonner said. “You know you shouldn’t be eating a grease-laced double burger with fried onions, fries and a milk shake, but once in a while, you’ve got to go for it. It was one of those things where no one will claim responsibility, but everybody enjoyed it.”

Even Parker, a native of Paris who considers himself a sophisticated diner, partook of the fast-food fare.

“That was awesome,” Parker said. “We did the same thing about three years ago, too, and that was awesome, too. Even though I’m a gourmet guy, it doesn’t hurt to eat a double-burger sometimes. I had two double-doubles and a milkshake. I was hungry.”

Stephen Jackson was ambivalent about the experience.

“It was good, but I don’t like In-N-Out like that,” he said.

“Fatburger, Sonic, Five Guys, but not In-N-Out. But I ate one.”

Pretty predictable that S-Jax would have something bad to say about In-N-Out, being a southern guy…

We haven’t heard any reports yet on whether the In-N-Out menu hits Tony Parker’s tastebuds the same way as “Le Tony Burger” does… Judging by my reaction in Episode 56 when eating the burger, I’d be surprised if Parker ever goes back to Quick again.

The best part of the story is the fact that Patty Mills said that fellow Aussie teammate Aron Baynes ate four double-doubles, a feat that not even Benyam could do.

“About three nibbles per burger,” Mills said.

Bane was truely “In-N-Out’s reckoning”.

Stay tuned for more antics from the Spurs this season… I’m sure of it.

Instagrammys – Week 20 – JaVale McGee & Kenneth Faried

The NBA’s version of the “Bash Brothers” Kenny & JaVale are taking their nickname a little bit too literally these days, wearing all black, hoodies & colourful backpacks, they’ve decided to “follow” this SUV all the way from downtown Denver to Pueblo in the early hours of the morning for a gee-up…

Let’s hope they make their next game… Sh*t could get real.

Wale vs the city of Toronto

This. Is. Hillarious!

During yesterday’s Washington Wizards v Toronto Raptors game, Baltimore natives Rudy Gay & rapper Wale were having some friendly heckling back & forth at eachother…

However, sh*t got real for Wale when the Toronto commentator Matt Devlin said on-air, “I’m sure somebody on Twitter can tell me exactly if they’ve ever heard of Wale. He’s not Drake; that’s for sure.”

Wale fans then proceeded to tweet him that Devlin & his co-commentator Leo Rautins we’re calling him out.

Wale then tweeted to Devlin:

Hold on, the steak knives are coming… But wait, there’s more!!!

Wale then proceeded to make his way up to where Devlin & Rautins were calling the game from to give them a piece of his mind. Devlin & Rautins mistook this as Wale wanted to come on the air with them.

Check out the video:

Although it isn’t able to be made out what Wale said, apparently he used some very colorful language to describe his feelings about being told “he’s no Drake”… Even though, let’s be honest… the call was bang on.

Only in the NBA.

NBA All Star Media Day – #believethehype TV

As a part of the #TexasTour, Tom & Benyam hit up NBA Media Day to chat to some of the players about the upcoming weekend, their season to date, Australia & much more.

Amongst others, #believethehype chat to Kyrie Irving who confirms his next visit to Australia – during the off-season for basketball camps in Melbourne.

Here’s a snippet of some of the “legit” questions that we spoke to the NBA All Stars about… Of course, we also asked our gee-up questions too! To see what NBA players had to say about Russell Westbrook’s singing habits, Jay-Z v Kanye West & the ultimate battle – Mighty Ducks v Cool Runnings, click here!

Patty Mills breaks down his towel waves

After Aron Baynes broke down his preferred towel waving method when we caught up with him in San Antonio last week, the man who’s leading the 2012-13 NBA Towel Waving Power Rankings has pulled together a video breaking down his various moves.

The Spurs once again have proved why they are 1 step ahead of the rest of the NBA. Having Aussies who support their team & like gee-ing up more than anyone else in the league means that you’re teams bench production (whilst off the court) will be hard to match.

Your move, Sacre.

Check it out…
