“We talk so much hoops, why not record this shit?”
Starting in 2011, #believethehype is a weekly NBA Podcast hosted by Tom Read and Benyam Kidane talking about all things happening in the National Basketball Association. It takes a comical, laid back, yet insightful approach to covering the NBA, not only focusing on the important issues but also a more irreverent view of the league.
In February 2012, the home of #believethehype launched believethehypeNBA.com, the site hosts not only the Podcast episodes but regular analysis & daily gee-ups. It’s a must go to location on the net to not only listen to the podcast, but keep up to date with everything happening in the NBA.
#believethehype are officially credentialed International Media by the NBA & offer access to NBA players & personalities that a number of other Podcasts can’t offer.
The Podcast includes regular segments such as:
- Player & Rookie of the Week – The weekly award for the best performances.
- Into the Toolshead with Benyam Kidane – Benyam throws a player or NBA Personality “Into the Toolshead” for his bonehead action during the week. Also known as the house JaVale McGee built.
- Tom’s Tweet of the Week – Tom scrolls through twitter to find the best 140 characters an NBA Personality has given the public.
- All NBA Five – The marquee segment of the Podcast! The boys put together teams on specific comical topics asked by their Twitter followers. From “Players to take home to your mothers” to ” Players you’d like to see own a restaurant” no NBA Personalities are safe from “All NBA Five” stardom!
- The Monthly Mailbag – Replacing the All NBA Five once a month, NBA Players “reach out” to Tom & Benyam & ask the boys for some life & career advice… It’s like Dr Phil meets basketball!
In addition to the Podcast, #believethehype also releases regular videos. #believethehype TV includes: video episodes of the podcast, interviews with NBA players & other gags.
Tom Read – @traread
Former starting point guard for the University of Canberra, Tom has always found himself talking NBA to anyone who would listen. After spending big patches of his childhood in Southern California, it was only natural that he would grow up to be a Los Angeles Lakers fan. Currently living in Sydney, Australia, after returning home from London, England… Tom can be found every weekend at the Kingdome watching his beloved Sydney Kings in the NBL.
Benyam Kidane – @BenyamKidane
Wagga Wagga’s favourite son Benyam Kidane lives and breathes the Philadelphia 76ers. His pet peeve is that ESPN Australia hasn’t shown a Sixers game since Allen Iverson was putting up 30 shots a game for them and he was putting up 30 shots a game for the University of Canberra… Both on the court and in the nightclubs. Currently living in Canberra, Australia, Benyam can be found either on the Moosheads podium dancing up a storm or cutting a killer crossover at the Belconnen Street Courts.
